Nara Dolls

Japanese:
Nara Dolls

These are colored wooden dolls made in Nara City. They are also called "Nara one-stroke carvings" because they are made to take advantage of the material and are roughly carved into shape with a single stroke, and have been a Nara specialty since ancient times. It is said that in the early Edo period, Kasuga cypress craftsman Okano Heiemon (pen name Shoju) of Nishigomon-cho, Nara, began making these dolls in addition to making cypress wood, in analogy with the Takasago Okinaou-na and Shojo dolls that were attached to the island stands of the ritual implements at Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara and the hats of the flute players of Dengaku-hoshi.

The cypress wood is soaked in hot water to remove the oil, and then carved to bring out sharp edges. They were sold as ornaments and for use as decorative items, and later the variety increased to include those based on Noh theater, standing dolls, and deer. From the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, woodcarver Morikawa Toen produced artistic works using deer and other themes. Currently, they are made as tourist souvenirs from Nara, and although most are around 5cm in size, there are also smaller ones measuring 3cm. They are awarded by Kasuga Taisha Shrine as New Year's zodiac charms, and in 1967 (Showa 42), the Year of the Sheep, a sheep was featured on New Year's postage stamps.
