…American female poet. A Puritan, she emigrated from England to Massachusetts in 1630 with her father, who later became governor of the colony, and her husband. Her early poems were little more than imitations of the Old Continent poets she had read, but she gained attention with her Tenth Muse, published in London in 1650. Her true talent lies in poems based on her experiences in America, such as poems about her family and Meditations. She was also the first female poet in the English-language world to write with a sense of poetic identity. …
