PCM stands for pulse code modulation, a technology that converts analog signals into digital signals. When a telephone signal is converted to PCM, it becomes a 64 kilobits per second (kbps) digital signal. Telephone signals are multiplexed onto bundles of multiple lines for transmission, and these bundles of lines are standardized. In Japan, a bundle of 24 lines (1.544 Mbps) is called the primary group, and a bundle of 96 lines (6.312 Mbps) made by multiplexing four primary groups is called the secondary group.
