A former town in Kuga County in the southeastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is connected to Oshima Island by the Oshima Bridge across the Ohata Strait. The Sanyo Main Line runs through it. Cultivation of Unshu mandarins is thriving here, and fishing, such as line-and-line fishing for sea bream, is also practiced here. 山口県南東部，玖珂(くが)郡の旧町。大畠瀬戸をへだてて大島に対し，大島大橋で結ばれる。山陽本線が通じる。温州ミカンの栽培が盛んで，タイの一本釣など漁業も行われる。2005年２月柳井市へ編入。12.01km2。3693人（2003）。
