A gastropod shell of the Haliotidae family (illustration). Originally meaning "lying on the floor," the name is thought to have come from the way it attaches to rocks on the seabed. It also has local names such as anago, nagareko, and nagarami. The shell is 7 cm long, 5 cm wide, and 1.5-2 cm high. It is egg-oval in shape, low and flat. It resembles a juvenile abalone, but can be distinguished by the row of holes along its dorsal edge, which has 6-8 holes compared to 4-5 in abalones, and by the fact that the holes are small and not raised. The coils are small and low, and are located toward the back of the shell, with the last coil being much larger than the others and taking up the majority of the shell.
