Hakidamegiku - Hakidamegiku

Japanese: ハキダメギク - はきだめぎく
Hakidamegiku - Hakidamegiku

An annual plant of the Asteraceae family. The stem is 10-60 cm tall, well-branched, soft, and hairy. The leaves are opposite, ovate, and trilaterally veined. From June to November, the plant produces small flower heads, each 4-5 mm in diameter. There are many yellow tubular flowers and about 5 white ray flowers. The achene is purple-black, and the pappus is short and scaly with a thorn-like upper edge. A naturalized plant native to Central America, it has spread worldwide as a weed. The name comes from the fact that this species was found growing in garbage dumps in Japan when it was first discovered.
