An insect of the Orthoptera family, Acrididae (illustration). A representative species of Japanese grasshoppers that are so-called grasshopper-shaped. Found throughout Japan. Also distributed widely from Asia to Africa, including Taiwan and the Philippines. Body length is about 35 mm for males and about 50 mm for females. Forewing length is about 25 mm for males and about 45 mm for females. Most of the forewings and abdomen are brown, and the hind tibiae are orange, but there is color variation in the cephalothorax, forewings, middle legs, and hind femora, and the overlapping parts of the left and right forewings, and depending on the intensity of the color, they are classified as green, brown, black-brown, and intermediate types.

直翅目バッタ科の昆虫（イラスト）。いわゆるバッタ型をした日本のバッタ類の中の代表種。日本全国に見られる。また台湾やフィリピンを含むアジアからアフリカにかけても広く分布する。体長は雄35mm内外，雌50mm内外。前翅の長さは雄25mm内外，雌45mm内外。前翅の大半と腹部などは褐色，後肢脛節（けいせつ）は橙色をしているが，頭胸部と前･中肢および後肢腿節，左右前翅の重なる部分などは色彩変異があって，その色彩の濃さによって緑色型，褐色型，黒褐色型，これらの中間型などが区別される。
