Ittada - Ittchu

Japanese: 一忠 - いっちゅう

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A Noh actor of the Dengaku Honza in the Northern and Southern Court period. A star player of Dengaku, he had a great influence on Sarugaku actors such as Kan'ami and Do'ami. The Kanjin Dengaku, held in 1349 (Sadawara 5/Shohei 4), which became famous for the collapse of the box seats, was a competition between the Honza and Niiza, but Ittada of the Honza performed with the Niiza star Hanayasha and others in the "Love Match," embarrassing Hanayasha and gaining the upper hand (Zeami, "Sarugaku Dangi"). Kan'ami said that Ittada was "the teacher of my style" (ibid.), and Do'ami studied directly under Ittada. Zeami himself named Ittada the first of the four "ancestors of our art," and recognized him as the great founder of Noh. However, Zeami said that he had never seen Ittada, and it seems that he had died before Zeami came of age in 1370 (Oan 3/Kentoku 1).

南北朝時代の田楽本座の能役者。田楽のスタープレーヤーで観阿弥,道阿弥ら猿楽の役者にも大きな影響を与えた。貞和5/正平4(1349)年に催され,桟敷崩れで有名となった勧進田楽は,本座と新座の競演であったが,本座の一忠は「恋の立合」で新座のスター花夜叉らと共演し,花夜叉に恥をかかせ優位に立っている(世阿弥『申楽談儀』)。観阿弥は一忠を「わが風体の師なり」(同書)と述べ,道阿弥は一忠に直接師事していた。世阿弥自身も一忠を「当道の先祖」4人の筆頭にあげ,能芸の大祖に当たる人物と認識している。ただし世阿弥は一忠を見ていないと述べており,世阿弥が物心のつく応安3/建徳1(1370)年ごろ以前に亡くなっていたらしい。
