A term that abbreviates Honjyaku (the unity of Honjyaku) and Honjyaku (the superiority or inferiority of Honjyaku). In interpreting the Lotus Sutra, the first 14 chapters (meaning 14 chapters) were called Shakumon (the trace gate), and the latter 14 chapters were called Honmon (the main gate), and the relationship between the two gates was discussed. Nichiren considered the Lotus Sutra to be the salvation of Shakyamuni, the founder of the teachings, for the Latter Days of the Law, and criticized the traditional Tendai sect's interpretation that the trace gate and the main gate are one and the same, arguing that it is the main gate that guarantees salvation through the Lotus Sutra. After Nichiren's death, there was a conflict over this interpretation between the theory that Honjyaku is the same as Honmon, which holds that Honmon is important but that it is in a relationship of unity with the trace gate, and the argument that the superiority or inferiority of Honjyaku should be clarified.
