Amboise (English spelling)

Japanese: アンボアーズ(英語表記)Amboise
Amboise (English spelling)
A town in the Indre-et-Loire department in central-western France. It is located east of Tours, where the Masse River joins the Loire River. Charles VIII was born and died here, and the king, who loved Italian art, ordered the construction of a castle (1492), which was later expanded by Francis I. It is particularly important among the castles in the Loire Valley, and is known as a royal palace that is unprecedented in terms of the comfort of its living space and the splendor of its decoration. There was already a fortress there in the Gallo-Roman period, and a bridge was built early on. It developed into a military stronghold, and in the 11th century it became part of the County of Amboise. It was confiscated by the royal family in the mid-15th century, and became the location of a royal palace. It was the site of the Amboise Conspiracy (1560) by the Huguenots. There are also many historical buildings, such as the Hôtel Clos Lucé (15th century), where Leonardo da Vinci was invited by Francis I to spend his later years, and the Basilica of Saint-Denis (12th century). Located on the railway line connecting Paris and Bordeaux, the city is a thriving manufacturing area for precision machinery, shoes, pharmaceuticals, photosensitive materials, etc. Population: 10,823 (1982).
