Also known as an HII region. One of the regions that is easily visible in light and radio waves, it is the physical name for the Orion Nebula and the Omega Nebula. These regions are observed through the recombination line spectra of ionized hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, etc., and are also called diffuse nebulae because they shine like beautiful clouds. Hydrogen atoms around large, bright stars with surface temperatures of tens of thousands of K are ionized by the strong ultraviolet rays from the stars, and although the density of ions is extremely small (10 to 100 ions/cm3), they create huge plasma regions with a diameter of 10 to 100 light years. HII領域ともいう。光や電波でよく見える領域の一つで,オリオン星雲やオメガ星雲などの物理的呼名である。これらの領域は電離した水素や,酸素,炭素などの再結合線スペクトルによって観測され,美しい雲のように輝くので散光星雲とも呼ばれる。表面の温度が数万Kの大きな明るい星の周囲の水素原子は,星からの強い紫外線のために電離されて,イオンの密度はきわめて小さい(10~100個/cm3)が,直径10~100光年の巨大なプラズマ領域を作る。
