...There are various forms of New Year's celebrations, such as a formal visit and banquet, a Kadorei ceremony where people simply exchange prayers at the gate or entrance and then make a round trip, or an abbreviated ceremony called a General Ceremony, a Unified Ceremony, or a business card exchange where everyone in the area gathers together. Originally, it was a ceremony where members of the family would stay at the main house and spend the New Year's Eve together to worship and welcome their ancestors and the New Year's God. In Shikoku and other areas, there is still a custom called Kado-biraki, where all members of the branch family go to the main house early in the morning on New Year's Day to open the front door. These family events expanded to include local ties and other areas, and developed into the village New Year's custom of visiting all households, and in cities, the New Year's visit to customers of merchants and to superiors at work, and even the development of New Year's cards that do not involve any visits at all. In addition, there is a custom of entertaining New Year guests, called "kuitsumi" or "tegake," in which food decorated on the three sides is served and the guests pretend to eat it, but this is also a formalization of this original practice of gods and humans eating together. *Some of the terminology that refers to "gate opening" is listed below. …
