It was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) in Cyprus in 1980. Located southwest of the capital Nicosia and east of the current city of Paphos, it is the ruins of a city dating from ancient Greece and ancient Rome to the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. The ruins consist of Old Paphos (Palaeopaphos), built by the Greeks, New Paphos (Nea Paphos), built by the Romans, and the tombs of kings on the outskirts. Around the 13th century BC, the Greeks built the Temple of Aphrodite (Venus), and it became a place of worship that attracted many pilgrims from outside Cyprus, but it gradually declined when New Paphos was eventually built west of Old Paphos. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in recognition of the ruins that represent each era and the historical landscape. ◇English name: Paphos Source: Kodansha World Heritage Sites Detailed Explanation Information |
