In the ionosphere, atmospheric molecules and atoms coexist with ions and electrons (free electrons) produced by ionization, and when an electromotive force such as an electric field is generated in the ionosphere, the ions and electrons move, causing a flow of charge, or electric current. This is why the ionosphere is electrically conductive. The existence of electrically conductive regions in the Earth's upper atmosphere was suggested in 1878 by Stuart B. Stewart as the cause of the daily geomagnetic variation, and in 1902 by A.E. Kennelly and O. Heaviside as a reflector layer for radio waves.
