A speed regulator for mechanical timepieces with a balance spring used in portable watches and home clocks. The origin of the word "balance" is unknown. It is a metal ring with a rectangular cross section, with a hairspring (a thin spiral spring) fixed to its axis, and it rotates and oscillates due to the elasticity of the hairspring. The period is determined by the moment of inertia of the ring and the elasticity of the hairspring. The oscillation regulates the rotation of the wheel train via the escapement.
