A type of cotton fabric, this is a summer kimono fabric with a texture similar to that of crepe. Originally, it was woven with pure indigo-dyed threads, a specialty of Awa Province (Tokushima Prefecture), but in recent years, it has been produced in a variety of colors, including indigo. It is characterized by the unique unevenness on the surface of the fabric, called "shibo," which occurs because the fabric is made of a mixed weave that alternates between plain weave and weft rib weave. When the fabric is boiled after weaving, the glue added to the threads falls off and the warp threads shrink, but the plain weave and weft rib weave shrink differently. The weft rib weave has a coarser weave, so it shrinks more than the plain weave, which is where the "shibo" comes in. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
