John Dos Passos

1896‐1970
American novelist. His parents were common-law partners, and although his father, a famous lawyer, loved him, he was not recognized until he was 16. His travels around the world as a boy also influenced his writing. He was introduced to aestheticism at Harvard University. Drawing on his experience serving in World War I as a field medic, he published A Man's Guide to 1917 (1920) and Three Soldiers (1921), which criticize the military. After the war, he associated with writers of the Lost Generation, traveling to Paris, Spain, and other places, and wrote travelogues such as The Rocinante Returns (1922) and The Orient Express (1927).

アメリカの小説家。両親が内縁関係であったため，著名な弁護士である父に愛されながらも16歳まで認知されなかったこと，少年時代世界各地を旅行したことが，彼の文学に影響を与えた。ハーバード大学で審美主義の洗礼をうける。野戦衛生部隊員として第1次大戦に参戦した体験から，軍隊を批判した《ある男の入門――1917年》(1920)，《三人の兵士》(1921)を出版。大戦後は〈失われた世代(ロスト･ジェネレーション)〉の作家たちと交わり，パリ，スペインなどを転々とし，《ロシナンテ再び旅に》(1922)，《オリエント急行》(1927)などの旅行記を書く。
