1896‐1970 American novelist. His parents were common-law partners, and although his father, a famous lawyer, loved him, he was not recognized until he was 16. His travels around the world as a boy also influenced his writing. He was introduced to aestheticism at Harvard University. Drawing on his experience serving in World War I as a field medic, he published A Man's Guide to 1917 (1920) and Three Soldiers (1921), which criticize the military. After the war, he associated with writers of the Lost Generation, traveling to Paris, Spain, and other places, and wrote travelogues such as The Rocinante Returns (1922) and The Orient Express (1927).
