A French saint and Carmelite nun, her real name was Thérèse Martin. She was also known as Thérèse de l'Enfant‐Jésus et de la Sainte‐Face. Born as the youngest daughter of a wealthy jeweller, she showed a strong attachment to her family from an early age and a tendency to immerse herself in her inner self. In 1888, she followed her two older sisters into the Carmelite convent in Lisieux. She led an unremarkable life of prayer and contemplation, and was devoted to a devotion that she called the "Little Way", combining the simplicity of a child with the acceptance of heroic sacrifice.

フランスの聖女，カルメル会修道女。本名テレーズ･マルタンThérèse Martin。〈幼きイエズスと聖なる御顔のテレーズThérèse de l’Enfant‐Jésus et de la Sainte‐Face〉とも呼ばれる。富裕な宝石商の末娘として生まれ，幼時から家族への強い愛着と，内面への沈潜の傾向を示す。1888年2人の姉の後を追ってリジューのカルメル会修道院に入る。外面的にはなんら目だたない祈りと観想の生活を送り，みずから〈小さき道〉と呼んだ，幼子の単純さと，英雄的な犠牲の甘受が一体となった信心に徹する。
