From the late 18th century to the early 19th century, several English dictionaries were published that paid some attention to words and meanings unique to America, but the most serious dictionary comparable to Dr. Johnson's was the two-volume American Dictionary of the English Language (1828) edited by N. Webster, who was already renowned for his spelling textbooks. It contained about 70,000 words, words, meanings, and usages unique to America, many examples were quoted from American works, and a rational spelling system was used, making it the forerunner of English dictionaries in America. …
