Telex - Telex (English spelling)

Abbreviation of telegraph-exchange. A recording communication method that combines automatic telephone switching technology with telegraph transmission and printing telegraph technology. Also called subscriber telegraph. Just like a telephone, a telex number is used to connect to the other subscriber, and communication can be made using a printer or display terminal, so it can be said to be a communication method that combines the characteristics of telephone service and telegraph service.

In Japan, the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (now NTT) started a service mainly for domestic connections in 1956, while the International Telegraph and Telephone Company (now KDDI) started a service for international connections only. The number of subscribers has steadily increased, peaking at about 76,000 in 1976. Since then, the number has been on a downward trend due to the expansion of facsimile communication and the spread of e-mail over the Internet. In September 2002, NTT Communications stopped accepting new subscribers, assuming that the service would be discontinued.
