"The Life of Oishi Kuranosuke" - Oishi Kuranosuke Ichidaiki

The first Chushingura film was Chushingura Go-danme (The Five Acts of Chushingura), made by Yoshizawa Shoten in 1907, a kabuki film starring Kataoka Nizaemon XI in the three roles of Yoichibei, Sadakuro, and Kanpei. Later, in 1910, Yokota Shokai made Oishi Kuranosuke Ichidaiki (The Life of Oishi Kuranosuke), starring the first movie star, Onoe Matsunosuke, and in the same year, Yokota Shokai also made Chushingura, the first complete film version of Chushingura, directed by Makino Shozo and starring Onoe Matsunosuke in the three roles of Asano Takumi no Kami, Oishi Kuranosuke, and Shimizu Ikkaku. The duo of Makino Shozo and Onoe Matsunosuke continued to work at Nikkatsu, adapting Chushingura into film many times, including the company's anniversary production Chushingura (1912), Kanadehon Chushingura (1917), and their first blockbuster, The True Story of Chushingura (1921).

…　最初の忠臣蔵映画は，1907年に吉沢商店がつくった《忠臣蔵五段目》であるが，これは11世片岡仁左衛門の与市兵衛･定九郎･勘平三役による歌舞伎映画であった。その後1910年，横田商会で映画スター第1号である尾上松之助の主演で《大石内蔵助一代記》がつくられ，つづいて同年，同じ横田商会が牧野省三監督，尾上松之助の浅野内匠頭･大石内蔵助･清水一角三役で，映画ではじめての〈忠臣蔵〉全通しである《忠臣蔵》をつくった。牧野省三，尾上松之助のコンビは，こののちも日活で，同社の創立記念作品《忠臣蔵》(1912)，《仮名手本忠臣蔵》(1917)，最初の超大作といえる《実録忠臣蔵》(1921)など，何度も〈忠臣蔵〉を映画化した。…
