1421‐98 A Florentine Renaissance scribe who produced many beautiful manuscripts for the Medici, Este, Federico da Montefeltro, and Matthias I Corvinus, the Hungarian king. From 1440 to 1480, his workshop was the literary center of Florence. However, the demand for manuscripts decreased with the development of printing, so he retired to a rural area near Florence and wrote Le vite, a series of biographies of famous people, both secular and religious, whom he had come into contact with.
