A perennial plant of the Podocarpus family that resembles moss and grows on rocks in mountain streams in southern Kyushu. It rarely grows in the upper reaches of the Okawa, Kamikawa, and Takasugawa rivers in Kagoshima Prefecture, and the Oyodo River in Miyazaki Prefecture. The scientific name of the genus, Hydrobryum , means "aquatic moss," and it has a shape similar to that of a moss plant. It is attached to plants by flat, green roots and performs photosynthesis, just like Podocarpus, but whereas Podocarpus has leaf-like roots that branch out like pinnates, Podocarpus has circular roots. The true leaves are thread-like or scale-like, and about 1 cm long. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
