Leopol'd Ivanovich Shrenk

Russian ethnologist. Also known as Schrenck. Born near Kharkov, Ukraine. From 1854 to 1856, he led the Academy of Sciences' survey of the Amur River and Sakhalin Island. His major work, Journeys and Surveys in the Amur Region in 1854-56 (4 volumes, German, 1859-1900), is a report on the survey and is famous for being the first comprehensive description of the racial makeup, culture, and customs of the people living in the Amur Region. The Three Tribes of the Amur Region (3 volumes, 1883-1903) is a Russian translation of the ethnological sections of the same book.

ロシアの民族学者。シュレンクとも呼ぶ。生地はウクライナのハリコフ付近。1854‐56年,科学アカデミーのアムール川・サハリン島調査を指導。主著《1854‐56年のアムール地方の旅と調査》4巻(ドイツ語,1859‐1900)はその報告書で,アムール地方に住む人々の人種構成と文化,習俗を初めて包括的に記述したものとして著名。《アムール地方の異族》3巻(1883‐1903)は,同書の民族学関係の部分をロシア語訳したものである。
