Sarusawa Pond - Sarusawa Pond

Japanese:
Sarusawa Pond - Sarusawa Pond

A pond in Nara Park in the center of Nara City. Located on the south side of Sanjo Street Suberizaka, this small pond is about 360 meters in circumference and was created as Kofuku-ji Temple's Hojo Pond, modeled after the Monkey Pond in India. The willows along the pond's banks and the pond's surface reflecting the five-story pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple are very picturesque, and the "Moon over Sarusawa Pond" was selected as one of the Eight Views of Nara. On the northwest bank is Uneme Shrine, and on the east bank is Kinukake willow. The Tale of Yamato tells us that a court lady who served Emperor Heizei threw herself into the pond, lamenting her fading popularity. The Uneme Festival is held in mid-autumn in September.
