Johannis de Rijke

A Dutch civil engineer, he was one of the foreigners invited by the Japanese government in the early Meiji period. His father was a coastal civil engineering contractor, so he learned the trade as a boy, and eventually became a senior engineer for the Amsterdam canal company. During this time, he was recognized by Van Doorn, and in 1873 he came to Japan with three other engineers to survey the ports of Osaka, Mikuni, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka, as well as to supervise the improvement plans for the Yodo River, Kiso River, and Jōganji River, the revised Tone River Canal plan, the erosion control plan for the Yodo River system, and the excavation of Lake Inban.

オランダの土木技術者で，明治初年に日本政府が招いた御雇外国人の一人。父が臨海土木の請負業者であったことから少年時代にその業をおぼえ，長じてアムステルダムの運河会社の上級技師となる。この間にファン･ドールンに認められ，1873年に他の3人の技師とともに来日，大阪港，三国港，広島港，福岡港などの測量調査にあたり，さらに淀川，木曾川，常願寺川の改修計画や利根川運河の計画改訂，淀川水系の砂防計画，印旛沼開削などを指導監督した。
