Teleonomy

Japanese: テレオノミー（英語表記）teleonomy

This term was proposed by CSPittendrigh (1958) as an alternative to the metaphysical term teleology, which had been used since Aristotle. The various phenomena exhibited by living organisms, such as morphology, physiological processes, behavior, life cycles, and developmental processes, each have a specific role and are formed to fulfill that role. The mechanistic explanation of such phenomena in physical sciences can only answer by what mechanism they are, but not why they are the way they are.

アリストテレス以来用いられてきた目的論teleologyという形而上的なことばに代わるものとしてピッテンドライC.S.Pittendrighによって提案されたことば(1958)。形態，生理過程，行動，生活史，発生過程など，生物の示すさまざまな現象はそれぞれに特定の役割をもち，その役割を果たすように形成されている。このような現象に対して，物理科学の機械論的な説明は，どのようなメカニズムによってそうなっているかに答えるだけであって，なぜそうなっているかには答えてくれない。
