1515‐82 Teresa de Jesús, also known as Teresa the Great, was a Spanish Christian mystic, reformer of the Carmelite order, and saint. She was born in Avila and entered the Carmelite Convent of Encarnación in the same city in 1536. One day in 1554, she had a mystical experience with Christ, which marked the beginning of her renewal of monastic life. In July 1562, she received permission from Pope Pius IV (reigned 1559-65) to found a reformed monastery, and on August 24, she founded the Convent of San José in a corner outside the walls of Avila.
