A general term for American Indians who speak the Ge language. They are found in the south and east of Brazil and in the north of Paraguay. They were originally hunter-gatherers, but later settled in the tropical forests. They have a complex kinship system with clear divisions into half clans, age classes, communal groups, and genders. The Xavante, Xerente, Cainga, and Kayapo peoples belong to this group.
