Uganda People's Congress

Abbreviation: UPC. A Ugandan political party founded in 1960 with the aim of realizing "African Socialism." With a support base among Protestant residents, it supported President Milton Obote, who held power from independence in 1962 until 1971. In January 1971, the party lost power in a military coup led by General Idi Amin, and went underground until President Amin was ousted in April 1979. After President Amin's downfall, the party won the general election held in December 1980, and Obote, who had been in exile in Tanzania, returned to the country and regained the presidency, but was ousted again in a military coup in July 1985. In January 1986, the National Resistance Movement seized full power and called for cooperation, but the party did not respond and instead engaged in anti-government activities. The party was divided over the boycott of the June 1996 parliamentary elections.
