...The first half of this period was focused on the study and collecting of Japanese art, centered around Boston, while the second half was focused on the creative activities of the Pacific coast "Northwest School." The former was characterized by systematic research, the formation of a vast collection, and art education, all of which were promoted by such people as ES Morse, Fenollosa, William S. Bigelow (1850-1926), La Farge, and Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), who came to Japan from the early to mid-Meiji period. These collections became the backbone of the Japanese art collections at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Freer Gallery of Art. Behind this series of developments was the work of Okakura Tenshin.

…In 1876, the collections of the Boston Athenaeum and other institutions developed into the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, which opened in its current location in 1909. The museum is known for its collections of Oriental art, Egyptian art, and American art, and is particularly known for its collection of Japanese art, centered on the collections of Fenollosa and William S. Bigelow (1850-1926). The Egyptian art is based on excavations by archaeologist George A. Reisner, and the museum is also famous for its collection of 19th century American art, centered on the collection of singer M. Karolik and his wife, and modern French art, including 37 Monet pieces. …
