Yasushi Akutagawa
Born: July 12, 1925 in Tokyo
[Died] January 31, 1989. Tokyo composer. Born as the third son of novelist Ryunosuke Akutagawa. His elder brother was actor Hiroshi Akutagawa. In 1945, he graduated from the composition department of the Tokyo Music School. While at school, he met his teacher Akira Ifukube, who had a great influence on him. In 1950, he released his breakthrough work, Music for Symphony Orchestra, which won a special prize in the NHK Broadcasting 25th Anniversary Orchestral Competition sponsored by the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK). His early style was heavily influenced by contemporary Russian music, and in 1953 he visited Dmitri Shostakovich and others in the Soviet Union. In 1957, he visited the Ellora Caves in India, and in the following year, in 1958, he released Ellora Symphony, which expressed an Asian world. He presented a new world with works such as the opera "Dark Mirror" (1960), "Concerto Ostinato for Cello and Orchestra" (1969), and "Sounds for Organ and Orchestra" (1986). He also worked as chairman of the Japan Council of Composers and the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers, and was active in a wide range of fields, such as supporting amateur orchestras such as the New Symphony Orchestra and hosting the NHK music program "Ongaku no Hiroba."

作曲家。小説家芥川龍之介の三男として生まれる。兄は俳優の芥川比呂志。1945年東京音楽学校作曲科を卒業。在学中に恩師の伊福部昭に出会い大きな影響を受けた。1950年に出世作となった『交響管弦楽のための音楽』を発表,日本放送協会 NHK主催の NHK放送 25周年記念管弦楽懸賞で特選入賞を果たした。初期の作風は,現代ロシア音楽の影響が色濃く,1953年にはソビエト連邦のドミトリー・ショスタコビッチらを訪問。1957年インドのエローラ石窟寺院を訪れ,翌 1958年発表した『エローラ交響曲』ではアジア的世界を表現した。オペラ『暗い鏡』(1960),『チェロとオーケストラのためのコンチェルト・オスティナート』(1969),『オルガンとオーケストラのための響き』(1986)などの作品で新しい世界を提示した。また,日本作曲家協議会会長,日本音楽著作権協会理事長として音楽家の活動基盤の整備に奔走,新交響楽団などアマチュアオーケストラの支援活動,NHKの音楽番組「音楽の広場」での司会など,幅広い活動を行なった。
