A city on the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Population 356,000 (1996). Yafo (English name Jaffa) is an old port city that appears in Egyptian documents from the 14th century BC. It flourished as a gateway to Palestine and was known as Yafa during the Islamic period. In 1909, a group of Jewish immigrants living in Yafo began construction on the sand dunes to the north, creating Tel Aviv. It subsequently absorbed many of the Jews who had immigrated to Palestine and rapidly developed into a purely Jewish, yet modern, Western-style city, becoming the largest city in Palestine in 1936.

イスラエルの地中海岸にある都市。人口35万6000(1996)。ヤフォ(英語名ジャッファJaffa)は前14世紀のエジプトの文献にも出てくる古い港町で，パレスティナへの玄関口として栄えた歴史をもち，イスラム時代はヤーファーとして知られた。1909年ヤフォに住んでいたユダヤ人移民団体がその北隣の砂丘地に建設を開始したのがテルアビブで，その後パレスティナに移住したユダヤ人の多くを吸収し，純粋にユダヤ人の，しかも西欧的近代都市として急速に発展し，36年にはパレスティナ最大の都市となった。
