A large foliaceous lichen of the family Pelbriaceae that grows mixed with mosses on the ground in the shade or on fallen trees. It has claw-like pycnidia at the end of the lobes. The epidermal layer is well developed and has clear veins on the underside. Its symbiotic algae are green algae or cyanobacteria. Approximately 20 species are found in Japan. P. aphthosa (L.) Willd., which is common on the ground in alpine coniferous forests, has green algae and a bright green, warty head on the back. P. canina (L.) Willd., which is common in lowlands, contains cyanobacteria, is dark brown, has dense white fluff on the surface, and has clear white veins on the underside. 日陰の地上や倒木上に蘚類と混生するツメゴケ科の大型の葉状地衣。裂片の先に爪状の子器をつける。上皮層は発達し,裏に明瞭な脈がある。共生藻は緑藻またはラン藻。日本産は約20種類。高山の針葉樹林帯の地上に多いヒロハツメゴケP.aphthosa (L.) Willd.は緑藻をもち,鮮緑色で背面にいぼ状の頭状体をもつ。低地に多いイヌツメゴケP.canina (L.) Willd.はラン藻を含み,濃い褐色で,表に白い綿毛を密生し,裏に明瞭な白色脈をもつ。
