Ramune (English spelling) Lamennais, Hugus Félicité Robert de
Born: June 19, 1782, Saint-Malo
Died: February 27, 1854. French philosopher and religious thinker. Born into a wealthy shipowner family who had achieved aristocratic rank, he aspired to become a religious person under the influence of his older brother Jean. He wrote an apologetics that advocated the supremacy of the Pope, and was pursued by the authorities, leading to temporary exile. After returning to France, he became a priest in 1816. He gained fame with Essai sur l'indifférence en matière de religion (1817-23), which advocated the authority of the Catholic Church being based on the consensus of all mankind and the strengthening of papal power. With the July Revolution of 1830 as a turning point, he started the newspaper L'Avenir, which criticized the monarchy and advocated the democratization of the church, bringing together young liberal religious thinkers and romantic writers. He further strengthened this tendency, denounced the authoritarianism of the Catholic Church, left the church and wrote Paroles d'un croyant (1834) and further advocated egalitarianism in Livre du peuple (1837), which had a great impact on the religious thought and literature of the time. After the February Revolution of 1848, he was elected a member of the National Assembly.

Ramune

A type of soft drink. A corrupted name of lemonade, it is unique to Japan. It is a carbonated drink with almost the same ingredients as cider, but it is familiar because of its distinctive bottle. Bottled water is generally sealed with a stopper from the outside, but Ramune bottles have a glass ball inside and the neck is narrowed on both sides, so that the carbon dioxide gas pushes up the glass ball and seals it.
