Turkey red oil

Turkey red oil

A chemical used in the mid-19th century to prevent mottled dyeing with Turkish red (alizarin), a natural red dye, and to obtain a uniform dyeing. It is also called Turkish red oil, but since olive oil treated with sulfuric acid was used at first, it is also called sulfated oil. When sulfated castor oil appeared around 1875, it became mainstream. Until the appearance of several new synthetic surfactants after 1928, it was used for a long time in the textile industry as the only surfactant other than soap. Even today, it is used as a dyeing aid for acid dyes, as an emulsifier/dispersant for pesticides, and as a tanning aid for leather using plants.
