With Kaji's arrival, cloisonné craft made a great leap forward, and his pupil, Tsukamoto Kaisuke (1828-97), greatly improved the technique under the guidance of the German Gottfried Wagner (1830-92), who came to Japan in the early Meiji period. Furthermore, in Tokyo, Namikawa Sosuke (1847-1910) invented wireless cloisonné, in Kyoto, Namikawa Yasuyuki (1845-1927) developed a distinctive style of cloisonné in the style of Japanese painting, and in Nagoya, Ando Jubei (1876-1953) and others emerged and enjoyed a flourishing craft.
