...The Kenyatta administration experienced political crises, including a failed coup attempt in 1971 and the assassination of J. M. Kariuki, a member of the ruling party who had criticized unequal distribution of income and corruption, in 1975, but remained relatively stable. Kenyatta died in 1978, and Vice President Daniel Arap Moi (1924-) became the second president. There was an attempted coup in August 1982, but Moi was re-elected in the elections of 1983, 1988, and 1992.
