Kurokawa Spring Village

A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period. Born in Tahara-machi, Asakusa, Edo. Nicknamed Jirozaemon, later Mondo. His pen name was Susukinoya. He first studied kyoka poetry under the second Asakusa An, Fukazawa Moriya, and succeeded him as the third Asakusa An. He later devoted himself to Japanese classics, focusing on the study of phonology and grammar. At the command of Hori Naonori, lord of the Suzaka domain in Shinshu, he compiled the Rekidai Zanketsu Nikki (1858). Many of his works, such as Onrin Kosho and Sekiso Manpitsu (1859, edited by Takahashi Hiromichi), were left unfinished. He died on December 26, 1866, at the age of 68. His grave still stands at Eiken-ji Temple in Kotobuki, Taito Ward, Tokyo. His adopted son, Mayori Kurokawa (1829-1906), was also known as a scholar of Japanese classics, a professor at the Faculty of Letters of the Imperial University, and a doctorate in literature. His real surname was Kaneko. His and his son's book collections are held at Notre Dame Seishin University and other institutions.

江戸後期の国学者。江戸・浅草田原町に生まれる。通称次郎左衛門、のち主水(もんど)。号は薄斎(すすきのや)。初め2世浅草庵(あん)深沢守舎(もりや)に狂歌を学び、その後を継いで3世浅草庵を称す。のち国学に専念し、とくに音韻・文法の研究に力を注いだ。信州須坂藩主堀直格(なおのり)の命で『歴代残闕(ざんけつ)日記』（1858成立）を編集する。『音韻考証』『碩鼠(せきそ)漫筆』（1859、高橋広道編）など、著作の多くは未定稿のままに終わった。慶応(けいおう)2年12月26日没。68歳。墓は東京都台東(たいとう)区寿の永見寺に現存。養嗣子(ようしし)黒川真頼(まより)（1829―1906）も国学者として知られ、帝国大学文科大学教授、文学博士。本姓金子。父子の蔵書はノートルダム清心女子大学などに所蔵。
