Ojibwa - Ojibwa (English spelling)
The Chippewa are an Algonquian-speaking tribe of Native Americans scattered across Canada and the United States. In the mid-17th century, when they first became known, they lived in the forests from the St. Mary River to the Lake Michigan peninsula, making a living by hunting elk and gathering wild rice. As they began to trade with whites for fur, they began to live in a wide area from the west side of Lake Winnipeg to Pennsylvania. Their social structure is based on traditional bands and exogamous patrilineal clans, and they worship animal totems. They are the largest Native American in the United States, with about 30,000 people living on designated reservations. It is estimated that about 50,000 people live on protected land in Canada.
