Polish violinist and composer. Also known as Bieniawski. Born in Lublin, he entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of eight. He studied under the famous Belgian violinist J.L. Massard (1811-1892). After making his debut in Paris and St. Petersburg, he traveled around Europe with his brother, a piano player, and established his reputation. He served as the court violinist in St. Petersburg from 1860 to 1871, and in 1874 he became professor of violin at the Brussels Conservatory, succeeding Butan. His bowing technique, in which the right elbow is positioned higher than usual, was inherited by Auer, and influenced the playing style of Russian performers in the first half of the 20th century. His students included Ysaé. His representative work is the Violin Concerto No. 2 (1862), and other short violin pieces such as Memories of Moscow and Polonaise Brillante No. 2 are widely loved. The Bieniawski International Violin Competition (held every five years in Poznan) is one of the stepping stones for violinists to enter the international stage. → Related articles Oistrakh | Sarasate Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
