The modern economy is a mixed economic system consisting of a public sector centered on the government and a private sector centered on private individuals and companies. While the private sector produces and purchases goods and services, the public sector also provides services called public goods and purchases goods and services. In Japan's national income statistics classification, the private sector refers to private corporations, private financial institutions (banks, trusts, insurance companies, and securities companies), and households (including individual companies and private non-profit organizations that serve households), and the rest is considered the public sector.

現代の経済機構は，政府を中心とする公共部門と私的な諸個人や企業を中心とする民間部門からなる混合経済体制である。民間部門が財貨･サービスの生産や購入を行うと同時に，公共部門も公共財と呼ばれるサービスの提供や財貨･サービスの購入を行う。日本の国民所得統計の分類では，民間部門とは，民間法人企業，民間金融機関(銀行，信託，保険，証券会社)および家計(個人企業および対家計民間非営利団体を含む)を指し，それ以外が公的部門とされている。
