Walid b.'Abd al-Malik
670-715
The sixth caliph of the Umayyad dynasty. Reigned 705-715. Like his father Abd al-Malik, he worked to Arabize and expand the empire, which stabilized domestic affairs and marked the dynasty's peak, with its territory stretching from the Iberian Peninsula in the west to Central Asia in the east. He also expanded the Kaaba in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, while confiscating the Church of John the Baptist in Damascus and renovating it to become the Umayyad Mosque. [Hanada Uaki]
