A perennial plant of the Arrowroot family native to tropical America, similar to canna (illustration). It is cultivated in tropical regions because its swollen rhizomes produce high-quality edible starch called arrowroot starch. It grows 60-180cm tall and produces fleshy, cylindrical, obovate rhizomes underground. The leaves grow alternately in two rows, and the leaf sheaths clasp the stem, producing large, egg-shaped or elliptical leaf blades similar to canna. Flower stalks emerge from the leaves, branching sparsely and bearing several white flowers at the tips of each stalk. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
