Schizanthus - Schizanthus

A semi-winter-hardy annual plant of the nightshade family (APG classification: Solanaceae). Native to Chile, it is also called kochoso or murekocho. The leaves are incised, and from March to May, many flowers with a diameter of 2 to 3 cm bloom. The flowers are multicolored, including red, peach, wisteria, purple, and white, and are used in flower beds and potted plants, and in recent years, some have been grown in large pots. Seeds are sown in August, transplanted once, then planted in small pots, and the tops are pinched once or twice to encourage many branches from the ground. In winter, it is cultivated in a vinyl greenhouse, but the daytime temperature should not be too high, aiming for around 10°C. Use soil with good drainage that contains about 30% leaf mold. A single plant is sufficient for a No. 5 pot, and planting in a flower bed should be done after the risk of frost has passed.

ナス科（APG分類：ナス科）の半耐冬性一年草。チリ原産で、コチョウソウ、ムレコチョウともいう。葉は切れ込みがあり、3～5月、径2～3センチメートルの花を多数開く。花色は赤、桃、藤、紫、白色などの複色で、花壇や鉢物に用いられ、近年は大鉢仕立てのものもみられる。8月に播種(はしゅ)し、一度移植したのち小鉢に植え、摘心を一、二度行って地際から多数分枝するよう育てる。冬季はビニルハウス内で栽培するが、日中温度を上げすぎないようにし、10℃前後を目標とする。用土は腐葉土を30％くらい配合した排水のよいものを用いる。鉢植えは5号鉢なら1本植えでよく、花壇に植え出す場合は霜のおそれがなくなってからにする。
