…After returning to Japan, he devoted himself to writing such works as “Journey to the Orient” (1851) and “The Visionaries” (1852), but after 1849 his attacks recurred, and he was repeatedly hospitalized and discharged until he was found hanged in a back alley of Paris in 1855. However, many of his masterpieces, such as the collection of short stories “Daughters of Fire” (1854, with “Psalms of Fantasies” at the end) and the novel “Aurélia” (1855), were written in his later years, when he suffered frequent bouts of insanity. Nerval was interested in mysticism from an early age, and in addition to occult sciences such as alchemy, Kabbalah, and astrology, he read many books on ancient religions of the West and the East. …
