French female novelist and film director. Born April 4th in Indochina (Vietnam). At the age of 18, she moved to Paris and studied at the Sorbonne (University of Paris). Her early works, A Quiet Life (1944) and Breakwater of the Pacific (1950), show a neorealist style influenced by American novels, especially Hemingway, but from Tsuji Park (1955) and Moderato Cantabile (1958), she established her own dialogue style that broke away from storytelling, and her spirit of inquiry to bring out the vitality of the unconscious that lies beneath speech has often led her to be compared to the writers of the Nouveau Roman. She continued to produce a series of works on the theme of madness, including The Joys of Lol V. Stein (1964), The Vice-Consul (1965), and Song of India (1973), and won the Prix Goncourt for The Lover (1984). He also produced more than 10 plays after "The Bridges of the Seine-et-Oise" (1959), and continued his collaboration with actress Madeleine Renaud until "Savannah Bay" (1983). As a screenwriter, he produced "Hiroshima, My Love" (translated as "24 Hours of Love" in Japanese, 1960) and "Such a Long Absence" (1961), but when he made a film adaptation of his own play "La Musica" (1965), he also took on the role of director, and made "Destroy, She Says" (1969) and "Nathalie Granger" (1972), treating sound and image as two independent series. His experiment of pursuing the emergence of involuntary memories through this new combination produced brilliant results in "India Song" (1975). He continued to shoot avant-garde works such as "Truck" (1977).
