Charles Dullin

Japanese: デュラン - でゅらん(英語表記)Charles Dullin
Charles Dullin

French actor and director. Born in a small village in Savoie. At the age of 19, he moved to Paris and lived a wandering life, appearing in melodramas and other dramas. In 1911, he attracted attention when he was cast as Smerdyakov in Copeau's production of The Brothers Karamazov, and in 1913, he helped Copeau establish the Théâtre de Vieux Colombier. In 1921, he became independent and founded the Atelier School of Acting, and the following year, he renamed the Théâtre de Montmartre to the Théâtre de Atelier, and continued his theatrical activities. He was praised for his outstanding acting and direction in plays such as The Miser and Volpone, and together with Jouvet and Pitoyev, he created the heyday of new theater between the two world wars. He premiered Sartre's The Flies in occupied Paris. He mentored Barrault and Villard, and Artaud was also one of his students.
