A city in southwest Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1922. Location of the Oshima Comprehensive Development Bureau. Occupying most of the Kameda Peninsula, it is a port city facing the Tsugaru Strait and developed as the gateway to Hokkaido, where the Seikan Ferry came and went, but the ferry was discontinued in 1988 when the Seikan Tunnel was opened. Since then, it has been connected to Honshu by rail, and is the starting point of the Hakodate Main Line and the Dounan Isaribi Railway. Formerly written as Hakodate, it became an open port at the end of the Edo period, and until the mid-Meiji period, it was the only commercial port in Hokkaido, with its economic sphere extending to the entire prefecture. There are factories for shipbuilding, fishing machinery, net making, refrigeration, chemical fertilizers, and seafood processing. Squid fishing is popular offshore, and the city produces a lot of dried squid. The city developed on a sandbar that connects to Mount Hakodate on the land-tied island, known for its beautiful night view. Fishery-related factories and warehouses line the southern shore of Tomoe Bay, and residential areas spread to the north. It is home to Goryokaku, Yunokawa Onsen, the Trappistine Monastery, and Mt. Esan. There are flights to various parts of Japan from the JR Hakodate Main Line, the Dounan Isaribi Railway, National Route 5, Route 227, Route 228, Route 278, and Hakodate Airport, and ferry boats from Hakodate Port to Aomori and Oma. A shuttle train runs to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station on the Hokkaido Shinkansen, which opened in March 2016. In December 2004, Toi-cho, Esan-cho, Tonohokke-mura, and Minamikayabe-cho, Kameda-gun, were incorporated into the city. The city sustained damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 677.86 km2 . 279,127 people (2010). → Related topics Oshima [Branch office] | Kameda | Hokkaido University of Education Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
