…In the midst of all this, the four rounds of discussions on the denial of tanka or the demise of tanka shed new light on issues from the classical tanka theory, such as the issue of tanka as the “poetry of the times” and the issue of “heart” and “words,” and also broadened the scope of tanka theory by incorporating new issues such as Western and Japanese poetry, tradition and modernity, and novels and poetry. The first was the preface to “Shintai Shisho” (1882), followed by Onoe Shibashu’s “A Personal Theory on the Demise of Tanka” (1910), Shakutaiku (Orikuchi Shinobu)’s “The Time of Tanka’s Entrance” (1926), and the so-called “Second Art Theory” period in the early 1940s after World War II.
